If we have a lease in joint names and my partner has left, is he still liable for paying half the rent?

I am currently renting a house and both mine and my partners name are on the lease. My partner has left and I wondered if they are still under contract to pay their half of the rent.

If the lease is in joint names then you will usually be jointly and severally liable for the rent. This means the landlord is entitled to look to one or both of you to meet the rent. You need to check however if there is any different arrangement in your lease but if he knows where you are and you are in the property then your landlord is likely to look to you for the rent and leave you to recover from your ex partner.
